Topics Project for Creating A Database of Islamic Architecture in Cairo

This IRC project which started in 2020 is proceeding with building of an online image database of Islamic architecture in Cairo, the capital of the Arab Republic of Egypt. As an outcome, we produced and launched “Database of Islamic Architecture in Cairo” in April 2021.

For the release of the images, we adopted IIIF, a framework for image release and sharing that has seen an increase in the number of participating institutions in Japan in recent years. Furthermore, we created a geo-reference that allows you to check the location of Islamic buildings on a map, as well as the captions of them (architects, year of construction, etc.), and got it displayed on the top page.

You can search Islamic buildings by choosing six categories on the top page: religious, commercial, military, water, residence and modern facilities. In addition, you can see images of each building by clicking “more info” on the top of the pop-up window.
